The Project '20 DVD series focuses on farming and contracting with modern classic tractors and machinery in Suffolk during 2019, 2020 and 2021. It continues in the spirit of Project 55 but features tractors from a much wider variety of manufacturers including Fendt, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Caterpillar, New Holland and John Deere. These all date, where possible, from before the turn of the millennium. Part One of the series starts off by turning back the clock to September 2019 to a ploughing spectacle of epic proportions involving four articulated giants (Ford FW-30 and FW-60, a Versatile 946 and a John Deere 8850). These were working together with large nine and ten furrow Dowdeswell ploughs, creating a very unique sight and sound. We then follow the subsequent land work through the year’s incredibly wet autumn and into spring 2020. Some late wheat drilling is followed by typical springtime activities such as top dressing, rolling, seedbed cultivations and drilling spring beans and spring linseed. There is a nod to Project 55 when a John Deere 4455 and 4955 work together to prepare a seedbed for sugar beet. Dry conditions continue as maize and wild bird seed mixtures are sown. Our longest running DVD ever, at approx 137 minutes. Part Two continues the story, picking up where Part One left off in June 2020. As before the action is based around the farming year, beginning with pre-harvest work such as muck carting and some ploughing. Harvest starts at the end of July, paving the way for a wide variety of land work, with everything shown from mole draining, subsoiling and stubble cultivations through to ploughing, rolling, pressing, power harrowing and some early drilling of lucerne. Highlights include the epic sight of three Caterpillar steel-track crawlers (D5B, D6D and D8H) working together with large Dowdeswell ploughs, boasting a combined 646hp and 26 furrows, as land is turned over in style in preparation for next year’s wheat crop. A Dowdeswell with a difference also makes an appearance in the form of a push-pull ploughing setup. Approx. 107 minutes. Part Three covers the very busy autumn and winter period, beginning mid-way through September 2020. The action begins with manure spreading followed by some primary cultivations and mole draining before the first drilling is carried out. An extremely wet autumn hinders progress and gives rise to some unconventional scenes as every effort is made to get next year’s crops established. The sight of three unusual continental European classics (Fiat, Fendt and Lamborghini) coming together to plough and drill a field of wheat is one of the many highlights. The sugar beet harvest then begins with the subsequent ploughing and drilling covered in detail, with a wide variety of iconic classics used and later compared. The programme concludes with some late ploughing after sugar beet, first in sticky conditions using a Caterpillar crawler and later on a frosty morning with wheeled tractors. Once again, a wide-range of manufacturers are represented throughout and there are many epic scenes of multiple tractors working together in the same field. Approx. 113 minutes. Part Four finishes off the story. It begins in early 2021 and concludes in late spring 2022, showing a variety of activities as the farming year progresses. Highlights include the sight and sound of six classic tractors, with a combined power output of over 1000hp, working together with four large power harrows running ahead of a 12m drill and rolls to prepare and sow a 90-acre field of spring linseed. Articulated giants are not forgotten, with a Ford Versatile 946 in action drilling and cultivating, and John Deere 8640 and 8850 tractors carrying out power harrowing and mole draining respectively. Other memorable spectacles include ploughing together with New Holland 8770 and 8870 tractors and rolling behind with a Ford TW-35 Force II, with the resulting scene reminiscent of the late-nineties. There is also a slight shift towards slightly more modern classic machinery in this final part, with Cat Challenger 75C and 85D and Claas Challenger 55, 75E and 95E rubber-track crawlers used for various tasks throughout the year. A good spread of machinery from a wide variety of manufacturers is once again shown in this fitting conclusion to a very unique and special DVD-series. An eclectic mix of tractors and plenty of action means the Project '20 series will appeal to anyone with an interest in classic farm machinery.
